Data Meets Fisheries Management

A groundbreaking Ontario study used machine-learning on website-traffic data to predict angler presence on 200 lakes with 78 % accuracy. Key takeaways:

Digital Footprints Matter – Online searches and page views closely mirror real-world fishing pressure.

Why RAILBLAZA Gear Is Your Competitive Edge

In today’s fast-paced tournament and tech-driven environment, your kayak setup needs to be:

Eco-Mindful Paddling – Support AI-guided lake management by submitting catch reports and following “Leave No Trace” principles.

Your Questions, Answered

Canada’s 2025 kayak-fishing season marries community spirit, structured competition, and data-driven stewardship.
Canada’s New Standard for Transducer Deployment

Across Canada—from the rugged coastlines of Nova Scotia to the glassy backcountry lakes of Alberta, kayak anglers are demanding more from their sonar setups. When RAILBLAZA launched the HEXX Sonar 360 Mount on June 16, 2025, it wasn’t just another accessory; it was a direct response to the unique challenges of Canadian paddling. Here’s why it’s a must-have for every kayak angler north of the 49th parallel.

The Canadian Challenge: Water, Weather, and Workflow

Canadian waters test gear like nowhere else. From spring ice-out trips on the Bow River to thunderstorm-prone afternoons on Superior, you need equipment that locks fast, swings free, and holds up under every condition. Traditional static transducer mounts can bind, rust, or need tools for each adjustment—hardly ideal when the next strike could happen any second.

Smooth 90° Deployment—No Tools Required

The HEXX Sonar 360 swings into water with a single, fluid motion—no screwdriver or hex key required. Whether you’re flipping out for side-scan along British Columbia’s rocky shorelines or tucking it back upright for portage at Algonquin Park, deployment takes seconds, not minutes. This speed matters when weather changes as quickly as fish bite.

Materials That Brave the Elements

At RAILBLAZA, we know Canadian anglers face UV, salt spray, and relentless freeze-thaw cycles. That’s why we built the Sonar 360 from anodized marine-grade aluminium and glass-reinforced polymers. It resists corrosion on the Bay of Fundy, shrugging off brackish spray, and maintains integrity on freshwater lakes in Ontario’s cottage country.

Modular Freedom with HEXX and StarPort

One size rarely fits all in Canada’s diverse fishing scene. The HEXX Sonar 360 integrates seamlessly with our HEXX base and StarPort track systems, giving you full control over placement:

Stern Position for down-imaging on deep reservoirs like Alberta’s Lake Louise tributaries.

Side Mount for forward-scanning shallow bays on Vancouver Island.

Removable Setup for efficient car-top transport between Nova Scotia’s harbour flats.

Swap positions on the fly—no drilling, no permanent install—so you can chase everything from pike in Manitoba to stripers in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Real-World Benefits for Canadian Paddlers

Speed: Deploy and stow in under five seconds, perfect for changing conditions on Lake Winnipeg.

Versatility: Compatible with Humminbird MEGA 360, CHIRP systems, and other static transducers.

Safety: Reduces deck clutter, keeping your kayak footprint clear during launches and landings.

Durability: Built to endure Canada’s toughest seasons—spring runoff, summer storms, and winter storage.

Tournament competitors on the Ontario Kayak Bass Trail and weekend warriors alike will appreciate the confidence this mount brings to their paddling rig.

Integrating the Sonar 360 into Your Canadian Rig

Choose Your Spot: Survey your kayak for the ideal track or StarPort location—stern for deep scans, side for shoreline ambushes.

Install the HEXX Base: Slide and lock into your existing track system or deck mount.

Attach the Sonar 360: Pivot it down for deployment, then swing up to stow—simple.

Manage Your Cables: Route wiring away from paddle zones and secure with included clips.

Field Test: Head out on calm waters first—perhaps Georgian Bay at dawn—to dial in the perfect position.

Looking Beyond: A Modular Future for Canadian Kayakers

The Sonar 360 is part of RAILBLAZA’s bigger vision: a fully modular kayak cockpit that adapts to every Canadian adventure. StarPorts hold cameras for live-streaming your catch on social feeds, GearHubs store essential tools for remote expeditions, and rod holders lock down your fight with a trophy salmon.

Together, these components turn ordinary kayaks into sophisticated watercraft—without permanent mods or complex installs. It’s flexibility, performance, and durability—all engineered for Canada’s vast and varied waterways.

Bottom Line

If you call Canada’s lakes and rivers home, the HEXX Sonar 360 Mount belongs on your kayak. It delivers fast, tool-free sonar deployment, rock-solid durability in harsh conditions, and the modular versatility every Canadian angler craves. Whether you’re chasing bass in Ontario’s backcountry, pike in Manitoba’s marshes, or stripers off Nova Scotia’s shores, this mount ensures your sonar stays ready when the fish are. Upgrade your cockpit, up your game, and fish Canada with gear that’s built to last.

Sustainability achievements

In the last 12 months alone we have saved just over 59,000 blister packs and recycled over 10,000kgs of plastic! All of these efforts are part of our continuous improvement program and ensure our environmental impact and recycling improves year on year, we are excited that you are part of that journey with us. Thank You!

What does wood fibre from a sustainably managed forest mean?

Sustainable timber refers to timber that has been harvested responsibly from well managed forests that are continuously replenished and ensure that there is no damage to the surrounding environment, or to native flora and fauna. The main ways to demonstrate timber is sustainable is by obtaining certification from either the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) or PEFC® (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)

What is PEFC & FCS?

PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, is a leading global alliance of national forest certification systems. As an international non-profit, non-governmental organization, they are dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. Find out more HERE

FSC forest management certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability. FSC-certified forests are managed to strict environmental, social and economic standards. Find out more HERE

When it was time for DeFoe to compete in the Championship Round, he took the lead and ran away with it when it mattered the most: Period 3.

He kept things interesting by hopping in the lake to land a bass during the final hour of competition. DeFoe ended the Championship Round with a total of 73 pounds, 14 ounces, more than 25 pounds over second-place Bobby Lane.

This is DeFoe’s third Bass Pro Tour win, and fourth MLF win. In 2020, he won Stage Three on Lake Fork and Lake Palestine. He started 2021 with a Stage One win on Sam Rayburn before winning the 2021 Stage Three. DeFoe recently won the 2021 Heritage Cup in Waco, Texas, which is an event that was “shot in the dark” in October 2020 and edited for television.

In this interview with Mark Johnson from Horizon and Stessl boats on the Gold Coast, we find out more about the exciting new development that will now make their range of boats RAILBLAZA TracLoader ready. Meaning boat owners can now fit their boats to suit without drilling any holes. Mark also shares a little more about the aluminium boat building process with a walk through the factory documenting each step in the process.

Watch the video interview below and learn more

Horizon aluminium boats have been going for 27 years now it is a family-owned business. We acquired Stessl boats in 2016 expanding our stable. Aluminium boat building is a really dynamic form of boat building innovation is our catch cry, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve boats and to make them more user-friendly.

We are really pleased to have been able to work with RAILBLAZA in New Zealand to develop a new TracLoader system which is going to be fitted standard to all the boats. The advantage of this system is tool-free anybody can do it and changes can be made continually to it.

Tool-Free Solution To Fitting Out Your Boat

In the factory, we build production boats and we try and accommodate everything that the customer is looking for but when somebody gets their boat they have a particular need they want to put a rod holder in a certain place a fillet table etc and that’s always difficult in a production company without having to drill holes or pre-think it. Sometimes you can only decide on that when you get the boat and you see how you’re going to use it.

This system that we’ve developed with RAILBLAZA will enable you to clip fittings in and move them to wherever you want on the boat. The TracLoader system has been used successfully in boats in America and we’re pleased to be first to market with it in Australia.

TracLoader StarPort & TracLoader SidePort

Right now we have orders going right out to next year and we’re currently fitting all of this track extrusion so that all boats going out into the factory will be ready for RAILBLAZA fittings. As part of this arrangement, we will be working with all of our dealerships and a full range of accessories designed for different applications will be available through the network.

How long does it take to make an aluminium boat?

On average from the start of the process to out of the door is about a 6-week process, that varies obviously with the size of the boats, if we have a lot of big boats going through the factory its a slightly slower process. If we have a lot of small unpainted boats they go through a lot quicker, but all up it is about a six-week turnaround from a raw bit of aluminium to delivery out of the door.

We use all modern machinery, but every single boat is hand-built for the most part, the dimensions are fractionally different so no two boats are identical. Every single staff member has a part in building that boat from when it comes in as a coil of aluminium (in the press boat range) and from that coil it goes on to a CNC router it goes through a tacking jig, it goes through to hull welding, into a builder, into paint prep, through to paint & into fit-out and then it’s fitted out and off to a dealership for motor and other bits and pieces.

We have 30 staff here and they’re all passionate about it, it is a great dynamic industry we get to modify adapt innovate create something that we’re all immensely proud of.

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (March 4, 2020) – RAILBLAZA Ltd. has reached an exciting milestone as the organization recognizes ten years of designing and producing accessories for the marine industry. With a versatile product line, RAILBLAZA allows the opportunity to spend less time setting up and more time enjoying the outdoors.

To celebrate they’re giving away exclusive limited edition green rod holders.

While working on his property, founder Ross Pratt struggled to find a reliable solution for securing things onto the back of his ATV. Born out of necessity, Pratt developed a system that he quickly realized would provide the answer to a multitude of problems, not only on land but also on the water. After kicking around various monikers at the dinner table, Pratt’s wife Julie coined the name RAILBLAZA.

RailMount StarPorts and G Holds making life easier around the farm

For Pratt, the LEAN manufacturing method had already been a proven approach, and one he had used at BEP Marine, a company Pratt helped his father start in the 1980s. Knowing he couldn’t do it alone, Pratt reached out to a former colleague, Mike Edgington, to run the operations. Although the company was small, their dedication to quality and efficiency ensured a solid foundation from the jump-off, allowing the first order to dispatch in March 2010. Ten years later, Edgington is still part of the leadership unit and is a member of a team that is dedicated entirely to ensuring the implementation of optimal production practices.

Which RAILBLAZA Mounting Base Is Right For You?

Always looking to further enhance production methods, in 2016, Pratt acquired Napier Tool and Die, an injection molding company located in Napier, New Zealand. The vertical integration has allowed RAILBLAZA to carefully control its supply chain, keep rising costs at bay, and establish an in-house recycling program. On the front line of sustainability is Pratt’s son, Chris, who is diligent in ensuring the company upholds its dedication to creating products with a low environmental footprint. RAILBLAZA adheres to strict quality standards by utilizing only top-grade engineering plastics for longevity, and minimal packaging made only of recyclable materials. This approach results in one of the lowest rates of warranty claims in the industry.

“Every year we use hundreds of thousands of cable ties, and the offcuts were waste, going to landfill. With a bit of thought, we set up a system to turn them into knobs for rod holders and more.” Watch the video below to see a sample of this process

As RAILBLAZA started shipping in 2010, their products were quickly picked up by kayak anglers, and this was a very high growth category for the first five years. Their expansion in boating products has been steady over the past ten years, and has gained momentum in the past five, to overtake paddle sports as a category . “We want to continue to strengthen our partnerships with manufacturers and distribution channels in the boating business.

With such a small space to work with Kayak anglers found the modular system changed the way they do things on the water, transforming their kayaks into practical workspaces

By listening to and working side by side with our customers, we can develop new products that their customers get excited about; we have a bright future ahead of us,” stated Edgington. In the coming decade, RAILBLAZA intends to continue its focus on sustainability efforts through manufacturing. “I consider us to be ahead of our peers when it comes to decreasing environmental footprint. It is imperative that boating and fishing businesses concentrate on protecting the ecosystems that support our industry, because without it we couldn’t exist,” says Pratt.

Over the years, RAILBLAZA has meticulously devised a formula based on product quality and ethical business practices while simultaneously focusing on sustainability and philanthropy. For Pratt, supporting the community is a priority. Monthly donations made to Yachting New Zealand, local sailing clubs, and community houses, allow the organization to contribute to sporting and outdoor activities for youth, as well as help vulnerable families in need.

“I believe a successful business must support not only its team members but also the wider community and the environment. Before we opened the doors, I set myself a goal of giving a percentage back to the community, and always keeping sustainability at the forefront of everything we do. I expect this of brands I use, and rightfully, our public expects this of us.” says Pratt.

It’s important to note recycling is the last of these, as it occurs at the end of a product’s life, we want our products to be used by the consumer for as long as possible, to eliminate, or delay the need for recycling. The primary sustainability goals of our design process are; Minimise the amount of materials used (Reduce) Ensure spare parts are accessible and easy to change if required (Reuse) Select materials that will have a long life in a harsh environment and can be recycled through currently available commercial recycling programs (Recycle)

Press release

Our very own RAILBLAZA team took out 4th place in the 6th Barracuda Tour 2018, and we couldn’t be prouder!

RAILBLAZA have been sponsoring the Barracuda tour since 2015, and all boats in the tour have been fully fitted out with our Rod Holders, ScreenGrabba iPad & Tablet Holder, Drink Holders and StowPods.

The atmosphere was intense but spirits were high at the 6th Barracuda Tour, which took over the Port du Crouesty, in Brittany, France, from 25 May to 2 June. For a few days, the sea around the Quiberon Bay was the theatre for the best no-kill fishing competition in Europe, and everyone among the 600 international contenders – 150 teams – agrees that the event is of international standard. Winners for the first time, the ATM Communication team (Côtes d’Armor) came first in the Grande Final ahead of Chantereyne (Beneteau Cherbourg) and Sun Way (trailers). Yannick Hemet, Beneteau’s sales director for south Europe, the organizer of the event, is extremely satisfied with the wonderful result.

What were the weather conditions like for this 6th Barracuda Tour?
The weather conditions were very variable in the beautiful Quiberon Bay area. The changeable weather during the Amateur Challenge and on the Thursday of the Grand Finale gave way to perfect conditions on the following days around the islands of Hoëdic and Houat. To add to everything, we had sailing yachts competing in the popular Tour de Belle-Ile regatta sailing in the background. It was magical!

What’s the team news this year?
We welcomed a large number of new countries: in addition to the Japanese, Croatians, Italians, Spanish, British, Germans, Americans, Turks and Poles, we were honoured to play host to Chinese
teams. Our Beneteau dealers are increasingly involved every year and a growing number of them organize the Selections. The professionalization of the teams is notable, as well as the participation of people coming from all walks of life. The astronaut Jean-Loup Chrétien, the professional UJAP basketball team and the world handball champion Lars Kauffman, joined us for the event this year. It also had a really big following at the Boatyard and we also had teams defending Beneteau’s colours.

What about the actual competition?
We opened the competition to all species of fish. Admittedly, the bass remained the prize catch, but all species were taken into consideration this year and the biggest catch was 79 cm long. In addition, the whole of the Barracuda range (6, 7, 8 and 9 metres) was there for the first time. For us, this is the best way to test these sport-fishing boats in real conditions. What’s more, we organized a “Rock fishing” event, in partnership with Fish à l’Affiche to encourage children to go fishing: with a 43 cm bass, thirteen-year-old Louis’s prize won hands down over many of the team’s catches!

What do you think makes the Barracuda Tour a success?
It’s a winning combination! The boat we chose has been a real ‘hit’ with amateur sea anglers and our partners contribute unreservedly to the event’s success by providing them with identical equipment selected among the latest innovations. From a purely technical point of view, the contenders are delighted with this one-design concept, which is one of a kind. The event is also visually powerful. Each hull is decorated in the colours of its sponsor and the spectacle of this colourful fleet is a sight to behold.

The competition can be followed virtually instantaneously by internet users all over the world and it draws a significant viewership. The competition combines friendly fun with serious fishing much to everyone’s pleasure. Lastly, the involvement of Beneteau staff members definitely contributes to the quality of the event and its success.

After the success of this 6th Barracuda Tour, what goals have you set for next year’s event?
The Barracuda Tour has reached maturity. With 60 boats and 600 participants, the event could hardly develop further in numbers. However, we are going to do everything in our power to put the accent on the event’s internationalization, by organizing a greater number of Selections in new countries.
